With Shaping Kulture, the first of several documentaries to come featuring an array of influential surfboard shapers, director (Joseph Vialpando, AKA Scott Betty ) offers up shaper, artist and style-maker Peter Schroff in a dazzling mix of offbeat graphics, archival surf footage, and carefully placed Schroffian musings. Shaping is but one aspect of Schroff’s artistic life, tracing a through-line of innovative board- making, set designing and installation art creation from the Echo Beach 80s Newport era to three decades in Venice Beach and, most recently, a move to San Pedro, where he lives in a veritable set piece for the performance art of day-to-day living.
